Controlling the phone with voice commands can be very useful in different circumstances. For example, you can control your music while cooking, respond to text messages while driving and, in general, keep your hands free, while doing all kinds of tasks.
However, a feature that is often overlooked is the ability to unlock the Android device with Google Assistant.
Although it is a service that can be activated in the Telephone Configuration, it can be somewhat complex at the beginning, in addition, it must be taken into account that this function has some limitations.
However, if you are interested in knowing how to unlock your Android phone through Google Assistant, read on!
Check if your phone has Google Assistant
If your phone is running Android version 7 (Nougat) or any other more recent iteration, chances are you already have Google Assistant on your device.
Any previous system (up to 5.0 Lollipop) can download and install the free application of the Google Assistant from the Play Store.
You will also have to make sure that the Google search application reaches at least version 6.13 and that the Google Playback Services application is also updated.
Take a quick look at the Google Play Store, touching the three lines in the upper left corner and selecting My Apps and Games will let you know if there is an update available.
After having checked all of the above, you can try to activate the Assistant. On devices running a standard version of Android (Pixel 2, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Android One and the like), you can press and hold the Start button to activate the application.
In other variants, you can access the application menu and click on the Google Assistant application icon.
If this does not work, you may need to enable the service, which can be done by opening the Google application, by touching the three-line icon (Men), selecting Configuration and then in the section Google Assistant, by pressing Settings again and selecting Activate.
You will be asked to configure the voice recognition function by repeating Ok Google ' four times. Once this is done, you should be able to say 'Ok Google' to open the application.
Unlock the phone with Google Assistant
To activate the voice unlock function, go to Settings> Google> Search, Assistant and Voice> Settings, select the tab Assistant and scroll down until you find a section marked as Devices with assistant
In that section you should see a list of devices, in case you have more than one associated with your Google account. Click on phone.
Now you will be taken to a page where you can configure the voice control function. Make sure Google Assistant is activated. Next, look in the section Get help using Voice Match and enable Unlock with Voice Match.
You will surely be asked for the unlock password to enable this option.
The Unlock option is only available if your phone already has an access code / pattern / fingerprint security lock set.
Once this is done, you can touch the phone's power button to lock it and then say 'OK Google' to open it again.
Does the Google Assistant really work?
To be honest, we got mixed results by activating this option on different Android phones. For example, it worked on the Pixel 3 XL, waking up the device and then allowing us to review our calendar and the weather, but telling us that we will have to unlock the phone to use functions such as Maps.
Our OnePlus 6T allows full access to all functions through the voice command, but when we tried the same with our Nokia 6.1 phone (Android One) we could not unlock the phone.
We have adapted the settings as best we can on all devices, but it seems that they are implemented slightly differently. Hopefully, your phone will be one that responds obediently to spoken commands.
