IBM presents its new meteorological forecasting system

IBM introduced its new meteorological forecasting system based on GRAF spercomputers (Global High-Resolution Atmospheric Forecasting) which promises more current and higher quality predictions up to 12 hours in advance and in areas of the world where they had never had access to anticipated weather data.

According to IBM, GRAF provide much more detailed predictions of the atmosphere and update its forecasts 6 to 12 times, this is a higher frequency than conventional global modeling systems. Current global forecasts cover 10 to 15 kilometers (6-9 miles) and are updated every 6 or 12 hours. Instead, the IBM GRAF system can cover up to 3 km (less than 2 miles) and is updated every hour, the company said in a statement.

“Optimized forecasts could be revolutionary for some areas of the world, as for a rural farmer in Latin America. If a farmer who never had access to high-resolution meteorological data now has the ability to anticipate electrical storms before they approach his fields, he may modify his sowing or harvesting plans. The challenges we will face in the coming decades to feed the world population will require new ways of doing things. This can help make a big difference for the future of agriculture in Latin America, ”said Jos Luis Spagnuolo, Technical Sales Director and Distinguished Engineer at IBM Watson Media and Weather.

This new technology was developed in conjunction with the National Atmospheric Research Center and this NCAR global next-generation open source model, called Model for Prediction Across Scales, which uses the latest scientific advances to forecast atmospheric conditions up to the level of electrical storms on a global scale

IBM GRAF is the first high-resolution operating model that is updated at one-hour intervals and covers the entire planet, explains IBM.

The weather is changing drastically, although much deny it, for that reason it is urgent that more precise weather forecasting is needed, especially in regions of the world that are not so monitored with last generation equipment. UMB ensures that this technology is vulnerable areas of Asia, Africa and South America, which have been neglected.
