Adobe Labs publishes eBook software for Mac

The 2.5 MB application is described as “built from scratch as a lightweight application that takes advantage of the internet.” The software works both with and without an active internet connection, and supports publications in PDF and XHTML formats.

A number of free publications and excerpts of publications have also been published that can be reviewed through the application. Adobe seeks feedback on the program from users so that they can refine it with a view to publishing the final version.

According to the developer, it is a complementary product to Acrobat Reader, noting that this software offers a number of features that are most useful for e-book readers.

For Macs based on PowerPC processors, Adobe Digital Editions requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher, 10.4.8 (or higher), a PowerPC G4 or G5 500 MHz or higher, and 128 MB of RAM.

For Intel-based Macs, Adobe Digital Editions require Mac OS X 10.4.8 (or higher), a 500MHZ or higher processor, and 128MB of RAM.

The final product launch is scheduled for the first half of 2007.
