[Tutorial] Install Android on your PC thanks to Remix OS

This is a tutorial that I wanted to do for quite some time. Already in January I had told you about the first Release of Remix OS, the first fork of Android (well not the first but for the moment the most popular) designed to run in a windows desktop environment as if it were Windows. This leads us to a wish I had for a version of Android that I could run on my desktop with a mouse and keyboard.

Well Remix OS is the answer to that desire, because it brings a version of Android based for now on Lollipop (but they are already working on Marshmallow’s) that allows you to run applications as windows in a 100% Android environment but adapted for screens and peripherals of a desktop PC. Remix OS is currently still in beta and in January a first edition was released that ran only from USB sticks. At that time I gave it a test but was very disappointed because running the system from a USB limited it a lot in terms of speed and the user experience was not pleasant if you did not have a USB 3.0 port and high speed memoryHowever that has changed in this latest version.

New version of Remix OS

Remix OS will bring a multi-tasking and windowed Android fork to our desktop PCs this January 12

But today I bring you good news. Some time ago they released a new beta that now includes the ability to install natively on your PC’s hard drive and put together a dual boot menu so you don’t affect your primary installation of Windows, Linux or whatever you use as your main operating system.

In this tutorial we are going to execute the installation steps to turn your PC into an Android, keeping your original Windows installation. Note that Remix OS in its current state still has some limitations, as it can only make a small 8GB partition for its entire operation, but it’s worth giving it a try.

Steps to Install Remix OS on the hard drive

Well less talk and more action, let’s get to what you need to carry out this installation.

  • A laptop or desktop with Windows 7 or higher (supports up to Windows 10). Alternatively it can be a Linux or Mac OS computer, but I am going to try a small Lenovo laptop with Windows 7.
  • At least 8GB of free space on your computer’s hard drive. For obvious reasons, it is highly recommended that you have much more space to spare to work normally in Windows.
  • Be clear if your processor is 32bits or 64bits, because you must download a version of Remix OS according to this.
  • Regarding the minimum hardware requirements, the truth is not very clear, but something that is very positive about Android is that it works very well with all types of machines, so it can surely give new life to that old computer that You had dust gathering in one corner

Well, having that clear, you will see that the installation of Remix OS is really simple but that if something delayedSo make sure you have some free time as this can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on how fast your team is.

  1. The first thing is to access the official Remix OS page and download the latest version of the installer for your PC, remember to download the 32 or 64-bit version depending on the type of processor you have. If you try to install the 64-bit version on a 32-bit processor, the installer will let you know so that at least you can stop the process and download the appropriate one.[Tutorial] Install Android on your PC thanks to Remix OS
  2. After downloading the .ZIP file that weighs a little more than 700MB you must unzip it in any folder on your hard drive, and look for the installation start. In the installer select the installation destination as hard disk and then the disk partition where you want to install Remix OS.[Tutorial] Install Android on your PC thanks to Remix OS
  3. After starting the process, the installer will create the Remix OS installation files on your hard drive and when finished it will ask you to restart the computer.[Tutorial] Install Android on your PC thanks to Remix OS
  4. In this step some of you may or may not have problems depending on the BIOS that your computer has, this because Remix OS will overwrite the Boot menu and you should see a selection where you can choose between Windows and Remix OS. If that menu does not appear and Windows starts up by itself, it means that they must restart the machine, and enter the BIOS menu with F2 or F12 and configure the Boot options to disable a secure boot or anything that prevents a double boot menu .[Tutorial] Install Android on your PC thanks to Remix OS
  5. If the previous step did not give you a problem, then you will be in front of the Remix OS installation screen in DOS, where it will automatically begin to partition the hard disk and install itself. This is the most time consuming step, so be patient because this can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more depending on how fast or slow your computer is.
  6. When this step is finished, the team will start in Remix OS, where you will have a beautiful Android interface adapted for the desktop. Here you can already do everything you are used to on Android, such as installing Apps, browsing, and enjoying.[Tutorial] Install Android on your PC thanks to Remix OS
