Waymo begins self-driving pick-ups for Lyft pilots

Waymo autonomous driving company. has launched its link with Lyft, using a “handful” of vehicles to pick up passengers at its Phoenix test area, according to CNBC. To be eligible, Lyft riders requesting ride must be taking a trip that begins and ends in the Phoenix area that is already blocked for their own autonomous testing.

The number of cars on the road is less than 10 as Waymo plans will eventually expand to 10 in total for this test, but they are not there yet. Those factors combined mean that the number of people who will get this option is probably not astronomical, but when it is delivered to them, they will have a chance to decide whether to go for the autonomous option via one of Waymo’s vans (with a safety driver on board) or just stick with a traditional Lyft .

Waymo and Lyft announced their partnership in May, and the company still plans to continue operating its own Waymo One commercial autonomous calling service alongside the Lyft team.
