Free repairs for locked Apple Watch

If you have an Apple Watch SE or Apple Watch Series 5, you should install the latest Apple Watch update. software to avoid a problem that could brick your device.

Tonight, Apple has released an update to software for Apple Watch, but watchOS 7.3.1 is only available for two models: SE and Series 5. All other models are still at version 7.3.

What is the reason? A serious face issue affecting these models in watchOS 7.2 and 7.3. Some users noticed that after putting the Apple Watch 5 or SE in ‘Save Power’ mode, they could not charge it or return it to “normal” mode even after a long time on the charging base.

watchOS 7.3.1 should fix this issue. See our article on how to update watchOS on an Apple Watch for more information.

The ‘Save energy’ mode is similar to the ‘Low power mode’ of the iPhone, since it disables non-essential functions to save energy, although it is something more drastic: the clock changes to only display the time and nothing else. The connection with the iPhone and other functions of the watch such as heart rate monitoring are disabled.

Apple has also announced a free repair program for affected devices. The manufacturer recommends first trying to update the Apple Watch Series 5 or SE to the latest version of watchOS and leaving the watch on the charger for at least 30 minutes.

If that doesn’t work, affected users can contact Apple Support directly and request a free mail-in repair.

This is not the first time that watchOS 7 has caused battery problems. In September 2020, just after installing the update, one of our colleagues noticed that his Apple Watch Series 4 started to lose battery power.
