In June 2021, Apple once again took advantage of the Worldwide Developers Conference to announce the arrival of a new update to the iPhone operating system: iOS 15.
Three months later, it became officially available (since September 20). Since then, small updates have been arriving with which you can take advantage of all the new features of the iPhone, as well as important corrections in its security system.
In this article, we explain everything you need to take into account before updating your device, as well as, of course, the steps you will need to follow to install the latest iOS. We also guide you through the process to do if you are using a beta version.
Currently, we are going for the iOS 15.6 version, but if you are more interested in trying out the new features of the next version of iOS, we recommend you take a look at our guide to install iOS 16 beta on your iPhone.
What to do before updating the iOS on your iPhone
Step 1. Create an iCloud or iTunes backup
The first thing to do before installing a new version of the operating system is to create a backup of your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. For this, you can use both iCloud and iTunes.
1. Make sure you have access to iCloud or iTunes, as well as an extra computer and device that you can use later to access the backup.
two. If you choose to create a backup using iCloud, you will need to first enable the option by going to ‘Settings‘ and tapping on your photo at the top. Now hit ‘iCloud‘. On the new screen, scroll down and tap on ‘Copy to iCloud‘.
Then activate the switch on the right hand side, keeping in mind that doing so will stop saving a backup on your computer when you sync with iTunes. Afterwards, you can create the copy as long as you have space in your iCloud.
3. Alternatively, you can use iTunes to create a backup of your device. You will need to connect it to a PC or Mac using a USB cable and have the program installed on your computer.
When you plug your iPhone or iPad into your PC or Mac, iTunes will open automatically. Now tap on it mobile icon below the toolbar to access your device’s preferences.
Then, choose where you want the backup to be saved – in iCloud or on your computer – and click on the ‘Back Up Now‘.
Step 2. Keep a copy of the old version of iOS
Although this second step can be safely skipped, we recommend keeping it in mind, as it will probably make things easier for you if you regret installing the latest version of the iOS operating system.
It is about creating a copy of the version you currently have before updating your device, which you can access later. However, keep in mind that sometimes this is not possible. You will be able to download it again from iTunes.
Step 3. Free up space for the new iOS download
It’s a good idea to free up a few gigabytes on your iPhone or iPad to make room for the new version of iOS, simply because sometimes your device will need them in order to update.
In our article on how to free up space on an iphone you will find all our recommendations, but we suggest above all remove some appswhich you can reinstall once the update is complete.
Step 4. Plug your device into a power outlet
There is nothing worse than running out of battery in the middle of an update. That is why we strongly recommend keeping the device to be updated plugged in during the entire process, especially if it is at 50% or less.
You can use the official cables that Apple sells from its website -this may interest you USB Cable West power adapteror opt for the cheaper versions that you will find in amazon.
Step 5. Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network
Lastly, remember to keep your device connected to a trusted Wi-Fi network throughout the update, especially if you don’t have a good 3G or 4G connection. It also will prevent you from running out of mobile data.
