Samsung starts production of 1.8-inch 64GB flash memory

The drive is the latest addition to a growing line of products by Samsung and other manufacturers who are using flash memory instead of magnetic disc-based recording technology. Compared to current hard drives, solid state memories (SDDs) are lighter, consume less power and can read and write information faster. They are also more expensive, although the price difference has been narrowing to the point that some of these solutions have started to be used in some laptops.

Samsung’s new drive is the same size as a conventional 1.8-inch hard drive. It is designed for use in a subnotebook, ultra-portable PCs, and other devices such as digital players.

Samsung has indicated that it is seeing a growing demand for these types of products, especially from manufacturers of ultraportable PC equipment.

The price of the unit has not been indicated, which will be sold to PC equipment manufacturers and not to end users.
